CCTV News: May 18 is the 35th National Day for Disabled Persons. On the occasion of the day for Disabled Persons, we know a front-line agricultural researcher - Wu Yong. Due to polio when he was young, Wu Yong's left leg was disabled for life, but he continued to overcome technical problems in the research fields of collection, preservation, identification and breeding of Chinese medicinal germplasm resources, assisted the development of the local yuzu industry, and lived the wonderful life of his own life.

In more than three months, the Chinese medicinal herb yuzu bamboo will usher in a harvest period. Seeing the growing Yuzhu in farmers' homes, Wu Yong finally took a "peace of mind" because this batch of Yuzhu has survived the high incidence of diseases and the harvest this year is guaranteed. He made a rough calculation and the farmers expected that a net income of more than 30,000 yuan per mu. More importantly, the successful experiment of this batch of citrus varieties is the result of Wu Yong and his team members' technical breakthroughs for several years. He said: "I'm really happy. After we took back the wild Yuzhu resources, after domestication, including breeding, it turned into a new variety. After the old variety degenerates, if the new variety is not selected, the industry will shrink after 20 or 30 years of degradation. The new variety may make the industry prosperous, so it is very happy for scientific researchers to discover the new variety."

In 2018, Wu Yong, who graduated from graduate school, was admitted to Shaoyang Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Due to polio as a child, his left leg was disabled for life. The leader arranged for him to work in the laboratory considering his physical inconvenience. But after Wu Yong learned about it, he not only took the initiative to apply for field research, but also asked to go to the newly established biological center to participate in the collection of crop germplasm resources. Wu Yong said that he dared to try any difficulties. Perhaps he never felt that he was a disabled person and dared to break through many things in this kind of optimism. If the heart is not broken, the body is not broken.

If the heart is not broken, the body is not broken. It is this positive and optimistic spirit of not bowing to difficulties that Wu Yong firmly believes that he can do what others can do. In response to the problems of confusing varieties and unclear identification encountered by Shaoyang Yuzhu industry in recent years. Wu Yong and his team members went deep into the mountains and forests again and again to collect samples for analysis and identification.
Because it is inconvenient to walk, for Wu Yong, wrestling during field research is common. Once, due to unsteady standing, Wu Yong accidentally took off a stone when he fell down. In an instant, a large number of hornets flew out, stinging him so hard that his whole body was swollen. He was sent to the hospital for rescue before he escaped from danger. But soon he ran out happily. Wu Yong said: "If you are not going to the field, not going to the front line to investigate and discover problems, it is difficult to solve problems in the laboratory. I have been to the mountainous areas of Shaoyang, and there are also those around Shaoyang, such as Chenzhou, Guangzhou Lianzhou, and Cili, and so on. They have almost all been to these places, because only in this way can the differences between this variety be discovered."

Over the years, Wu Yong and his team have collected nearly 30 Vitaminus germplasm resources, screened and cultivated more than 10 Vitaminus varieties with good disease resistance and high yield, and successfully promoted the variety update of nearly 10,000 mu of Vitaminus bases. He also proposed a series of countermeasures such as standardization of Yuzu planting, and provided important reference for standardized Yuzu planting in many aspects such as germplasm identification, purification and revitalization, and planting management improvement. The leader evaluated Wu Yong: "The biggest advantage of this young man is self-reliance and self-confidence. He has never regarded himself as a person with physical defects and is more difficult than ordinary people."

Now, Shaoyang Yuzhu production and sales volume account for more than 70% of the country's production and sales volume, and the products are sold to more than 20 countries and regions, with an annual output value of more than 5 billion yuan. In the future, Wu Yong hopes to further promote the deep processing of Yuzhu, continuously extend the industrial chain, and make Shaoyang's Yuzhu more competitive in the domestic and even international markets. Wu Yong said: "I want to truly promote Shaoyang Yuzhu so that the entire Yuzhu industry can flourish. For the agriculture in my hometown, I want to change the world from seeds like Grandpa Yuan Longping through my own efforts. People always need spiritual strength to nourish themselves. I am really happy to engage in agriculture."
