In this issue, I will share with you Mr. Niu Yefong's thoughts on reading, Secretary of the Party Committee and Chairman of Shanghai Xinhua Bookstore, Vice President of Shanghai Press and Media Industry Association, Part-time Professor of East China Normal University and Shanghai University of Finance and Economics, and Director of Shanghai Writers Association.

Reporter: How did you fall in love with reading? As a manager of a cultural enterprise, how to establish and maintain good reading habits and can you share your unique reading methods?

I benefit a lot from reading, especially I think reading has a beauty effect. When I was young, I probably failed the score, but now I can probably score 60. I think about it carefully and it is probably the only reason why I read more books. So I always feel that reading has similar effects to hyaluronic acid on people. Of course, just like beauty has risks, it is extremely important to read what to read and how to read.

More than 4 years ago, the superior party committee sent me to work at Shanghai Xinhua Bookstore. I was "a ecstatic to read poetry and books." I have always felt that deep love creates responsibility, this is true for the family and the workplace.

I don’t have a special reading method. I am definitely not a genius in reading. I just think that reading is a noble act with the lowest financial cost. With this idea, I can really feel disgusting if I don’t read for three days.

Reporter: In today's coexistence of e-books, audio books and paper books, which reading method do you prefer? Please briefly describe the reasons.

Reporter: In the fast-paced social life, what do you think readers still need to enter physical bookstores such as Xinhua Bookstore? What unique experiences can physical bookstores provide?

The objective reality has been in front of our book industry peers for many years, that is, online book purchases have the advantages of lower prices, more varieties, and less time for target readers - these three physical bookstores cannot achieve and surpass them. What kind of physical bookstore does the big city of Shanghai need? This is an important proposition we think about. In recent years, we have upgraded stores according to these three principles:

The location selection of my standard bookstore is mainly "cultural heritage". If you have money, you can buy scenery, but if you have money, you can't buy history and context. The 1927 Lu Xun and Ueyama Memorial Bookstore, which were restored and expanded on the original site of Ueyama Bookstore, are the most important cases of Shanghai Xinhua's practice of this concept standard. Now, whenever Japanese politicians or tourists come to Shanghai, this bookstore is a must-visit place. Minister Shulei also visited the store and purchased books.

Another absolutely important criterion is "there must be a theme that hits people's hearts". The 1925 Bookstore, which won the "zero breakthrough" for Shanghai Xinhua, was named "China's Most Beautiful Bookstore" in 2022. Since the bookstore opened, I always say "This is where Comrade Chen Yun, former Minister of the Organization Department of the Central Committee and the First Secretary of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, has joined the party and worked." When I meet the financial industry, I say "This is where Comrade Chen Yun, a Republic's abacus, joined the party and worked." There are almost no one who hears it. If the physical bookstores under Shanghai Xinhua talk about "theme that hits people's hearts", they must not talk about the Xinhua Bookstore Backlight 226 at No. 226 Nanchang Road, which is a bookstore with the theme of disabled people.

The third important thing is the selection of bookstore managers. The Shanghai Bookstore we reopened this time, 11% of our employees are graduate students, 60% are undergraduate students, and 29% are junior college students. The average age is born in 1995, that is, 28 years old. Use such talent soft power to build the hard power of this bookstore operation.

I regard the current physical bookstore as a "cultural laboratory." Since the experiment is to explore the possibilities and paths of success through failure.

Reporter: Please recommend a must-read book to young readers. Which one would you choose? Please briefly explain the reasons for the recommendation.

Niu also imitates: Reading is actually a very personal matter. Especially when you go deeper through extended reading, it is really vast.

If you recommend it to young friends who are about to enter society, I suggest you read Mr. Gao Yang's "The Complete Biography of Hu Xueyan" carefully (the publisher can choose authoritative ones), especially those with high IQ and low EQ. To do things, you must first be a good person; and doing too big things means that risks are at your disposal. When I read this set of books back then, I felt that "I regret meeting each other too late", so I especially hope that young people will "be still not too late".
