CCTV News: On April 10, the power consumption system of Shandong Haiyang Nuclear Power Unit 3 was completed, marking that Unit 3 officially entered a new stage of system debugging.
The Haiyang Nuclear Power Unit 3 and 4 Project is the first nuclear power project to be started during the "14th Five-Year Plan" of Shandong Province. It is one of the landmark projects in Shandong Province to build a tens of millions of kilowatt-level nuclear power base in the Jiaodong Peninsula. It is expected to be fully put into production in 2027. In the early stage, Unit No. 1 and 2 have been put into production and power generation. Compared with other nuclear power plants, Haiyang Nuclear Power has also added the function of nuclear energy heating, greatly improved energy utilization efficiency, and achieved remarkable environmental protection results. Compared with before nuclear energy heating, the average PM10 concentration in Haiyang City's heating season decreased by 43%, and the average nitrogen dioxide concentration decreased by 13.7%. According to the relevant person in charge, after the completion of Units No. 3 and No. 4, the annual power generation of the four units of Haiyang Nuclear Power can reach 40 billion kWh, which can meet the daily electricity needs of half of the residents in Shandong Province. It can reduce emissions of 32 million tons of carbon dioxide every year, save 12.21 million tons of standard coal, and provide more clean heat sources for the Jiaodong Peninsula area.

The reporter came to the dome of the nuclear island of Haiyang Nuclear Power Unit 3. This is the highest point of the entire project at present. It can be seen that the project infrastructure construction is coming to an end. The electricity sent backward from the power grid is like the "finishing touch" of the dragon, making the systems and equipment in all aspects of the entire project "live", which means that the project has officially entered the debugging stage.
Next to the nuclear island is the nuclear power unit equipment assembly work area. Here, dozens of tons of equipment are first assembled independently. Then, it is like building blocks, and the overall lifting is completed at the designated location.
Next, the reporter came to the interior of the nuclear island of Unit 3, and it can be seen that the environmental conditions here are very high. In order to prevent foreign objects from falling, two layers of mesh are pulled on the top, and the nuclear fuel rod will be installed under the blue cover cloth in the future. It can be said that this is the "heart" part of the entire nuclear power plant.
The one I see now is the 1:1 ratio nuclear fuel assembly model. There are many fuel pellets stacked on each fuel rod. The height of the entire fuel assembly is nearly five meters. Through the cross-sectional view of the nuclear island model here, you can see that 157 sets of fuel components like this are installed in the center of the reactor. During operation, nuclear fission heats the surrounding water to 320 degrees Celsius, and then obtains high-temperature steam of 268 degrees Celsius through heat exchange devices such as steam generators. These steams are transported to the turbine through these yellow pipes. Here, the heat energy is converted into kinetic energy, and then through this generator set, clean electricity is obtained.
By 2035, my country's nuclear power generation is expected to reach 10%
Not only Haiyang nuclear power, but in recent years, the development of nuclear power in my country has steadily advanced and the pace has accelerated significantly.
Since this year, while approving the start of a number of coastal nuclear power projects with mature conditions, my country has steadily promoted the construction of nuclear power projects under construction in various places. It is expected that by the end of this year, the installed capacity of nuclear power in operation will reach 64.7 million kilowatts.
At present, 102 nuclear power units under operation and approval are under construction in the country, with an installed capacity of 113 million kilowatts, the scale has risen to the world's first place, and the proportion of nuclear power marketization is continuing to increase. In 2024, 11 units from five projects including Xuxu, Jiangsu were approved, and the number of approved units reached or exceeded 10 for three consecutive years.
At present, my country's nuclear power generation in the total society is 4.73%. By 2035, my country's nuclear power generation accounted for 10% of the total power generation, doubled compared with 2022.
